The Turbo Admin “Business Model”

I feel I should say some things about the “business model” behind Turbo Admin, my command palette for WordPress. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.

  1. I made a cool thing!
  2. I made it for me, really, but I wanted others to have it because it’s like magic!!
  3. I wanted people to have it and start benefitting from it straight away.
  4. In some ways I consider it done/finished software, and always did. If I never update it again it still works and does a useful job.
  5. A 3 year changelog history says that it never was “done”. Today it’s better than ever and I still have a roadmap.
  6. I could have made it free but the very, very small cost I put on it ensures that customers try it first, find it useful, and really want it. This reduces support!
  7. It’s very much a side project. I work on it because it’s cool, exciting, fun (I have Easter eggs planned – the logo is a snail! 😂). But it’s not a full-time thing and that’s clear in “The Deal
  8. But having said that, I work hard on it and want it to be awesome.
  9. I believe the market for WordPress command palettes is small and niche. Marketing is hard. BUT the customers I have love it and are so kind and help me spread the word! Thank you!!
  10. I’m really grateful that I got to share my magic tool with people. It makes me really happy!

I’m aware that this is not really a “business model” at all. I’m not making huge amounts of money. That’s not the point. But I’m also not stressed out with tons of support & promises to deliver.

You can see that as good or bad. I just think it’s different.

Software is amazing isn’t it? I can self-teach so much. I can make interesting & useful things. I can share them with the world instantly. Sure, I can make money from them. But I don’t have to. It can just be fun & exciting to make, share and help others!
